COMMISSIONS

All commissions start with a conversation, you can express your idea through words, sketches, pictures, blueprints… sometimes just an empty space. After the initial exchange of ideas a budget is established and a basic concept illustration will be provided. An approval of design direction will be requested at this time. Then a formal proposal/contract is presented and a deposit will be collected. Detailed shop drawings, including any revisions, are provided before the build begins.

The building process of a new design is an artistic one, there are occasional unforeseen details that require slight design or engineering adjustments. These adjustments are made to maximize the pieces beauty and structural soundness, you will be notified of any notable design changes.

FROM THE CRAFTSMAN

Working with clients and pushing myself to achieve perfection in the shop through an imperfect medium is where I find joy, peace and purpose. It’s my sincere hope that the love instilled in everything I do can be sensed by all those that experience it. “The Orb” that my logo is based on was originally used by monks to denote that something had been done to the best of their ability, from my shop to your home or business, that is my promise to you. Thank you for supporting handmade and helping to keep the craftsmanship in fine woodworking alive.

TESTIMONIALS

“My wife Olivia and I worked with John to design a dining table and custom study shelving for our new home in North Rim. As an architect I’m pretty discerning with design and detail, particularly in my own home, and I can say that we couldn’t be happier with John’s work! In addition to impeccable design and craftsmanship, John is a pleasure to work with, and Olivia and I highly recommend him!”

“When my husband and I married, we asked John Clayson to build us a custom coffee table that could display our photos/memories. His attention to every detail blew us away! He went above and beyond making us the perfect table. I can’t say enough good things about him and his craftsmanship. This table has already been through so much… dogs running over and under it, it has definitely taken a beating and is holding up beautifully! It is for sure a piece to be passed down and we will treasure it forever.”

-Brittany Naegel

“I spent several months looking for a table that would fit the bench seat in my kitchen, in a style I liked. When I asked John Clayson to design one, I couldn’t believe how carefully he listened to my needs, and how beautifully crafted the table was. Exactly perfect, a masterpiece. And he was so easy and fun to work with.”

“When my husband told me we needed to find a new bed, my search made me frustrated. All I could find was cheap particle board covered in cloth, or a fake wood veneer. If you want real wood that doesn’t break within 3 years, then you have to go to Pottery Barn and get cookie cutter furniture. Neither option appealed to me. When I contacted John for a quote on an idea I had, I figured I was probably out of my league. Not only was the quote very reasonable, he worked with me and made my idea even better! I now have my STUNNING forever bed that I LOVE crawling into at night! I enjoyed working with John so much, I have now commissioned an entryway mirror from him. Thank you John for understanding my vision and turning into a beautiful reality!”

“John Clayson made a beautiful entry bench and matching stool (we had a pair) for our home in Bend. I had seen his work online which prompted me to contact him for these projects. The stool was matched with a pair of cherry and steel stools that the Joinery (in Portland) had made for us years ago. The one John made for us not only matched the others perfectly, but we find it more beautiful . We worked with John on a design for an entry bench and he was responsive as well as creative in the designs that he presented us with. He saw our house, gave us some ideas on what he thought would look good in the space, and tweaked the design a bit per our feedback. We will work with John again on future projects and I would recommend him to anyone looking for high quality pieces of furniture.”

“My husband and I worked with John to design a desk and some book shelves for our home. I knew what I wanted but couldn’t seem to find it in any of the standard furniture stores. I told John what I was looking for and shared a few photos to give him a good sense of what we wanted. John sketched up a few different design options. I was able to give feedback and we made a few adjustments until it was just right. The finished product was beautiful and I know we will have these pieces forever. Without a doubt the desk will forever be my favorite piece of furniture in our home! I couldn’t recommend John more highly. If you need a piece of custom furniture, please look no further.”
